世界地図を広げて見てみると、ハンガリーという国がヨーロッパの真ん中にあることがわかる。西ヨーロッパ、フランスやドイツ、オーストリアからハンガリーを経由して、東のルーマニア、そしてトルコへ。また北のポーランドからハンガリーを経て、南の旧ユーゴ諸国へ―。バックパッカー的な旅行者が多いと思ったが、それも頷ける。彼らはここをヨーロッパの中継地点、そして長期の休憩場所としながら、次の行き先を練っているのである。オアシスみたいなところだろうか。

　You might notice that Hungary is located in the center of Europe when you open a world map. Going through western european countries such as France and Germany to Hungary to Eastern countries, Romania and Turkey. Traveling through northern part of Europe, such as Baltic counrtries and Poland to Hungary to southern countries like former Yugoslavia ones. It is understandable that I found that many travellers with backpack in Hungary. They are staying in Hungary as a resting place for their long trip, considering about where to go next. This is the place which seems like oasis.

　私にとって、ブダペストは単なるオアシス以上の存在であった。

　For me, Budapest was not the mere oasis city for rest.

　北から南へ垂直に落ちていくドナウ川。このか細い川の東側には、国会議事堂、西側には王宮がお互いの美を競い合うかのように向い合い、それらの周りには広々とした開放的な広場が立ち並ぶ。この両岸を架橋するのは、これまた煌びやかな三つの橋だ。夜になると、真ん中のくさり橋がライトアップされて、闇に紛れて光を放つ。決してギラギラしていない。けばけばしくもない。すべての風景を包み込むような、優しい光である。

　Donau river flows north to south. parliament buildingm on the east side of this river and royal palace on the western side are standing face to face as if competing for their beauty. Around these buildings, there are many opened areas. It is these three bridges that connect the river. At night the large bridge gives away its light in the mist of darkness. There is nothing arrogant about this light. This is the light that embraces all the scenary with its gentleness.

　この幻想を現実たらしめる装置がブダペストには存在する。ほんのりと夢見心地を誘う温泉である。ここはヨーロッパでも有数の温泉地で、町の至るところに温泉施設がある。初日の夜、ドナウ川の西側にあるルゴス温泉というところに入った。伝統的なトルコ風呂で、真ん中に丸い形をした大きな浴槽があり、その周りには四つの小さな丸い浴槽がある。硫黄を始め、何種類かの効能があり、６０度近くの熱湯にも浸かれる。水着を着ているため少し違和感があるが、久しぶりのお湯に浸かり、体中の疲れが消えていった。ハンガリー人はみんな友達やカップル同士で来ている。ある種のレジャー施設であり、社交の場である。

　There is a mechanism in Budapest that connects its illusory beauty to reality. It is those hot sprngs that exist around this city. Budapest is one of the most famous place for its hot spring and you can find them here and there around the city. At the first night in Budapest, I went to one of the spas, Logos spa, on the west side of river. They had a traditional Turkey-style bathtubs. At the center were largest bathtub with round shape, and four small tubs around it. Each bathtub has its ownl medical benefit, some of which are as hot as over 60 degree. You might find it a bit weired to have a bath with bathing suit, but most of hungarian people enjoy this spa with friends. This is a part of places for leisure and social contact.

　ブダペストの町は、よくまとまりながら、よく分散されている。これはプラハとの大きな違いかもしれない。プラハの旧市街には「すべて」がある。この小さな旧市街にすべてを詰め込むことに成功してしまったため、夏のシーズンに観光客が殺到したとき、チェコ人たちは隅っこへと追いやられる。プラハの風景はアイデンティティーを失い、ぼんやりと宙に浮く。ブダペストには各エリアに人の集まる広場（ハブ）のような場所があり、それらがネットワークのように繋がっている。

　Budapest is a city which spreads out around without losing its unity. This is a stark difference to Prague in Czech. Prague has in its center everything that has something to do with its important history. The town was successfully established in such a condensed way that Czech people are forced out in shadow with all tourists flowing in during summer time. Landscapes of Prague lose its identitly and float unstably. In Budapest, there are many hub areas where people can gather and talk with each other, and these places are well integrated as networks of the city.

　ドナウ川に沿った国会議事堂、ここに沿って広がる緑の広場、王宮の周りに広がる古い町並みと要塞からの眺め、そして北の英雄広場から入っていく市民公園、その公園の中心にあるシーチェニ温泉と旧市庁舎―。すべての場所がそれぞれ主役になれる要素を持っている。それでいて、これらが広がり合って、結びつき、醸成される一体性。これは歩いてみて初めて分かる魅力であろう。ブダペストの空間の一つひとつが地元に根付いており、風景のなかにハンガリーの生活を垣間見ることができる。

　　　ブダペストはオアシスで終わるにはもったいない、魅力あふれる町である。
