すっかりご無沙汰しています。ウプサラでは外に５分いるだけで凍え死にそうなくらい寒い日が続いていますが、元気でやっています。ここ最近は、夜の22時に寝て、朝の6時に起きることを心がけています。ブログの更新が減ったのは、夜にコンピューターを使わないようにしているからです。寝る直前にインターネットを見たり、ブログを書いたりすると、よく寝られなくなるからです。といっても、長年慣れ親しんだ生活スタイルを変えることはそれはそれで難しいです。
　It’s been a while since I wrote last time. I have been doing fine here. although it got very cold to the extent that I will be frozen outside for five minutes. For a while I’ve made a rule that I go to bed at 10pm and wake up at 6am for one month. One of the reasons why I did not write as many writings as before is that I tried not to use my computer at night. For, using computer and particularly writing blog could make it difficult for me to sleep afterward. However, it is not that easy to change accustomed habits.
　11月と１２月は、大学院では「方法論」（Methodology)という授業を取っています。これは政治学、開発学、平和•紛争学の専攻のすべての学生が同時に履修をする必修科目です。量的分析と質的分析の二つに分かれており、現在は量的分析だけを学んでいます。特に、政治学における統計の読み方と使い方について、簡単な数式を交えながら、学んでいます。
　For the last two months, I have taken a course about methodology. This is the mandatory course for all political science students, including development studie, peace and conflict. The course is divided into two parts: Quantitive and qualitative part. For the first one month, we learn about quantitive analysis, particularly how to interpret and use statistic with some formula for political science researches.
　すでに学部で習得した学生にとっては丸々二ヶ月を方法論に費やすのは時間の無駄に感じるかもしれませんが、政治学における具体的な研究事例をもとに授業を進めていくので、今後の研究を行う上でそれなりに応用ができそうです。特に、独立変数と従属変数（何をもって何を説明するのか）の概念の重要性については強調し過ぎることはないでしょう。
　For some students who have already learned at bachelor, it might be boring to spend the whole two months for methodology. But the course is fruitful for me because through the lectures and classes I could learn the concrete examples of how to use these statistics skills, which might help me to develop my own researches in the future. Also, I came to home the importance of the concepts of independent and dependent variables. These concepts should be always emphasized.
　日本の大学の政治学科では、統計学は選択科目で（私は履修しなかったけど）、しかも統計学の専門の先生が授業を行うこともあり、自分の専攻の科目にどのように生かせるのかが具体的に学びづらいという欠点があるかもしれません。その点、ウプサラ大学では統計の授業を受け持つのは、政治学の教授です。政治学の研究分野に沿った統計の方法論を学べるだけでなく、量的分析と質的分析をどのように使い分けるのかについても詳しく学べます。あまり新しい知識や見方を学んでいませんが、それなりに有意義な授業だと思います。
　At my university in Japan, statistics course was selective not mandatory. In addition, the teacher in statistic course is usually not specializing in political science. Thus, the problem is that it could make it hard for students to better understand how those statistics methods can be used for their own studies. In contrast, at Uppsala University, it is a professor who teaches the method course. Political science students can not only learn the methodology which is suited for researches in this field, but also understand how to apply different methods, quantitive and qualitative analysis, to different phenomena. I find this course quite satisfactory, even though it is not the most exciting thing to study.
　来週の木曜日にテストがあり、それが終われば質的分析に入ります。そして、12月17日からは冬休みに入ります。
