スウェーデン人の友達のヨナス君に招待されて、他の日本人の友達と一緒に彼のサマーハウスに行ってきた。サマーハウスとは、要するに、夏の長い休暇の間に過ごす別荘のことである。こっちでは１年間あたり大体4週間～5週間の有給休暇を取るので、別荘でゆったりと過ごすというのがスタンダードらしい。別荘自体を所有している人はたぶんそんなに多くないと思うけど、借りて過ごす人は多いようだ。統計によれば、スウェーデン人の約半数が夏をサマーハウスで過ごしている。

　Invited by my swedish friend, Jonas, I and some Japanese friends visited his summer house. Summer house is a place where people spend summer vacation. Here in Sweden, people usually take four weeks of vacation and relax there. I think there are not so many people who own their own summer house, but many would rent. According to some statistics, almost half of swedish choose to stay in there during summer vacation.

　ヨナス君の別荘は、ストックホルムの郊外にあった。電車とバスを乗りついで、世界遺産にもなっているドロットニングホルム宮殿（ロイヤルファミリーの住まい）の近くを通り、大きな山を通り抜けてメーラン湖のほとりにやってきた。カラフルな別荘らしき建物が整然と立ち並んでいる。ここが彼の別荘かと思いきや、小さなボートでさらに１５分ほど湖の奥地へ行くという。自家用ボートを所有していることにびっくりした。運転には資格も何も要らないらしい。セーフジャケットも着ない。「危なくない？」と聞いたら、「毎年サマーハウスで酔っ払った人がボートに乗って死ぬ」という。

　My friend’s summer house was located outside stockholm. We took trains and buses through Drotning palace, royal family resident which is designated as world heritage, to the edge of lake Melaren. The colorful buildings which looked like summer house were standing in an orderly line. We did ride the small boat for fifteen minutes to the inner part of lake. I was quite surprised to find that he owned his own boat. No qualification for driving. No safety jacket. I asked him if it was dangerous. “Some people in boat die every year because they got drunk”. He answered as a matter of fact.

　メーラン湖の中心から周りの島を眺めると、ストックホルムにこんなにたくさんの島々があったのかと思う。誰も住んでいないような孤島がなんと多いことか。もしも中学生くらいの年齢だったら、クラスの友達と無人島探索をしていたと思う。さらに奥へと進む。島の岸壁に沿ってサマーハウスが立ち並ぶ。ある別荘にはステンレス製っぽい手作りの滑り台。別のところには１０ｍほどの人工的に作られたビーチがある。

　Seen from the middle of lake, you can appreciate how many islands are there in Stockholm. Especially many island in which nobody seemed to be living. If I were a junior high school student, I must have explored the islands with my friends. Along the wall of rock of island were summer houses built side by side. One of them was equipped with a long slide and another with a private small beach.

　しばらくして彼の別荘の島に到着し、ボートを縄に繋いで上陸。目の前には岸壁の岩山が神々しく切り立っている。１０メートルほど上へ目を向けると、いかにも別荘といった風貌の一戸建ての家があり、周りには木々や花々、そして小さな銅像たちが空間を彩っている。その横に煙突付きの木造の小屋があった。「これなに？」と聞くと、これは自家用のサウナだという。サウナで限界ギリギリまで暖まったあと、そのまま岩下の湖のなかへと飛び込む。これが北欧流サウナの楽しみ方である。
　
　Finally, we landed at his place, fastening the boat alongside the quay. In front of us was a rocky wall. Just 10 meter up, there was a small house which looked like the very summer house, surrounded by trees and flowers, and small statues. You could also find a tiny cabin on the way. It turned out to be his private sauna! Try to warm up to your limit and dive into the lake. This is the way people in Scandinavia enjoy sauna at summer house.

　サマーハウスの中に入ると、小奇麗なリビングルームがある。奥のキッチンにはメルヘンチックな肘掛け付きのイス、そしてテーブル。窓の外には柔らかな太陽の光が溢れて、メーラン湖と島々のパノラマがどこまでも広がっている。イメージの世界にしか存在しないと思っていた、理想化された美の世界観がそこに存在している。いつの間にか現実世界との境界線を渡っている。無へと向かって意識が落ちる。「無為になろう」という意識はすでに抹殺されている。ストイシズムよさようなら。

　Inside the summer house, there is the common room with sofa and armed-chair and table in the kitchen. The gentle sunny light filled the window and the panorama was magnificent. Idealized image of beauty was there, which seemed only to exist in my imagination. I had already acrossed the boundary to another world. My consciousness was thrown into “nothingness”. This is a very world where people don’t even have the awareness of what it is like to be relaxed.

　たとえば、美というものが頭のなかの創造の産物だとすれば、美意識は現実を歪曲することによって強化される。イメージを所有せよ。現実を作り変えよ。そして美意識はさらに高みへ向かって走りゆく。そう考えてみると、北欧が過度に美化されるのも故なきことではないかもしれない。たぶん。

　If only the beauty is the product of our imagination, the sense of beauty is reinforced by distorting the reality. Get the image of your own. Produce your own reality. And the sense of beauty will be keener. Now I just understant one of the reason why scandinavian countries are excessively ideolized.
