フェリーのアナウンスがあり、目を覚ました。

　I woke up on Ferry by the announce of the arrival.

　時刻はちょうど午後14時。急いでカバンを背負い、上の階段へ走った。ドアを開けてデッキの外へ出ると、優しい太陽の光が降り注いでいた。天気は文句なしの晴れ。不思議と風はない。船のデッキの周りをカモメが飛び回っている。そこに集まった人々の視線は、カモメと海の向こう側にびっしり固定されている。海の向こうに姿を見せたのは、ゴットランド島の町、ヴィスビー。僕がアニメ「魔女の宅急便」を見て以来ずっと行きたくて仕方なかった、あの夢のような島である。

　It was 14pm o’klock on the dot. I grabbed my bag and dashed to the upstairs. When I opened the door and went outside, the gentle sun shine falled around. No doubt it is sunny day. No wind. A group of sea gull flying over ferry. People who gather at this place were looking only in one direction. what was there over the sea and sea gull. It is the town of Visby, in Gotland, where I had alway dreamed of visiting since I saw the animated movie “Kiki’s Delivery Service”.

　赤いレンガに包まれた小さな町並みは、横に細長く伸びる島の真ん中にぼんやりと浮かんでいる。赤茶色に染まった集落のようにも見える。フェリーが町に近づくにつれて、教会や個別の家、そして人々がくっきりと輪郭を持って現れてくる。その一方、ヴィスビーの町の持つ美の一体性はぼやけることなく僕に直撃する。ヴィスビーはゴットランドの中心であるが、城壁によって外の島と切り離されてしまった。孤島のなかでもヴィスビーは閉じ込められたエリアであり、それがゆえにここの美は凝縮されて反発して、より輝かんとする。この町のもつ美の全体性と細部の個別性は対立することなくピタリと重なり合い、僕に直撃した。なんと美しい島だろうかと思った。

　The landscape of the town covered with red-brick roof seemed to flow vaguely on the middle of long-streched island. It looked like a hidden village colored with red. As the ferry went closer, the outline of churches, each houses, and people became clear-cut. At the same time, a sense of united beauty of Visby hit me directly. Located on the center of Gotland, Visby was separated from the rest of outer islands by the castle walls. The fact that Visby was a detached area all the more concentrated the beauty of Gotland. The united and separated beaty of Visby went no contradict each other, hitting me so heavily. What a beautiful island it is!

　僕にとってのヴィスビーはこの一瞬の美とともに消え去った。上陸したのちの町はやはりどこか味気無い。写真を向けても個別性と全体性が重なり合うあの感覚は決して得られなかった。ヴィスビーの美しさはやはり幻だったのかもしれない。帰りのフェリーでは、デッキの外にすら出なかった。もう二度とあの美と出会えることはないと思ったから。そしてあのときの感覚を幻だと確認したくなかったから。

　I never expected that this beauty only existed at this moment. After the arrival on the land, I found no fascination. No such sensation as united beauty. I supposed it might have been an imagination of mine or just an illusion. I did not even go outside the deck on the way back to Stockholm, for I doubted I would meet the beaty again and I did not want to confirm that it was my imagination.

　ゴットランドは中世のハンザ同盟の中継地点として栄えた。ヴィスビーはドイツ商人（リューベック）たちによって開発された町だ。13世紀に、ゴットランド島の農民たちの襲来を恐れてヴィスビーを囲むようにして城壁が作られた。だが1361年にデンマーク王のバルデマール四世によって占領されてからは以前のような活気が失われた。そしてその後、この美しい町を再びリューベックが焼き払うことになるとは誰が想像しただろう。このとき燃やされた多くの教会は廃墟となって現在も残存している。

　Gotland flourished as a main place for Hansa league. Visby was developed by the Lubeck German merchants. In 13 century, the castle wall was built around Visby in order to prevent the peasants and farmers on the Gotland from attacking Visby. However, after the occupation by the Danish King Valdemar I in 1361, Visby lost its power as it were. Then, who ever imagine that this beautiful town was burned down by Lubeck themselves. Nowadays, there remains some ruins of churches.
