ストックホルムから電車で40分ほど北上したところに位置する人口18万の都市・ウプサラ市。この小さな大学町を舞台にして、今日から3日間（夜通しノンストップ）のスケジュールで、北欧で最も大きく最も熱いオタクの祭典（？）が始まった。ウプサラ・コンベンションの頭文字を取って、その名を「UPPCON（ウプコン）」という。

　　Just 40minutes away by train from Stockholm, there is a small city called Uppsala with 180,000 population. The biggest and hottest pop-culture festival in Scandinavia just started yesterday and will contines untill Sunday. They call this Uppsala Convention “Uppcon”.

　このイベントはウプサラ会（正式名称は「UPPSALA－KAI」)という団体によって01年に始められた。当初は50人程度の小さいサークルだった。それが年々大きくなり、去年はついに2000人を突破。第八回目を迎える今年は3000人を超える見通しだ。スウェーデン全土はもとよりヨーロッパからも、たくさんの日本のマンガやアニメ、ゲーム、音楽などポップカルチャー好きが集まるという。

　　This event has been held by Uppsala-Kai for eight years. My friend told me that although just few participants at the beginning, more and more people were getting joined to this event every year, amounting for over 2000 people last year. And they expect over 3000 people this year. People who are interested in (J)Pop-culture are coming here not only from Sweden but also from Europe.

　午後12時、ウプサラのコンサートホールの建物の前に行くと、視界からはみ出るほどの長蛇の行列がそこにあった。パッと見たところ、意外に女の子が多い。ほとんど例外なくコスプレに身を包んでいる。不自然に光沢を持った黒い髪に、シルバーチェーンアクセサリー。ヴィジュアル系バンドでも見に行くような格好だと思ったら、これは漫画NANAのコスプレだった。赤い装束に身を包み、額には呪文のようなハチマキ。これはNARUTOの中に出てくる女忍者だそうだ。

　　When I got to the concert hall building, there were so many people lining up for entrance. It gave me impression that there were more girls than boys. Almost of them were dressing up in Cosplay. Some girls group who had many silver accesories with unnaturally black hair. It looked like they were going to listen to Visual-style Band. They said their style was follewed by NANA. Other group was dressed in red robe with head band which had strange sign. They said they were trying to become Women Ninzya, “Kunoich”, learning from the manga NARUTO.

　びっくりしたのは、ウプコン参加者のほとんどが寝袋を持ってきていたことだ。コンサートホールで寝る気なのかと尋ねると、「ウプコンの主催側が周辺の学校を寝床として用意しているからそこに寝泊りする」というのだ。遠方からの参加者にも優しいではないか。素晴らしい配慮である。

　　Almost all of participants in UppCon was carrying sleeping bags. I asked one of them if they were going to stay in the concert hall inside. They told me that they would sleep at a school where UppCon had arranged. I think it was so kind for some participants who came from faraway to get places to sleep.

　会場に入ってみると、予想以上に広い。

　When I entered the building inside, it was bigger than I had expected.

　3階建ての各フロアに、5つのブースが設置されている。一階はゲームコーナー。ここには基本的に男の子しかいない。二階には日本のドラマ、映画を流し続ける鑑賞コーナー。漫画やフィギュア、DVDや音楽CDの販売コーナーは三階。みんなここぞとばかりに買いまくる。「今年は人が多くて大変」と、今年で三年目というガンダム売りの日本人のおねえさんはこぼしていた。

　　There were five sections on this building. First was game-section. You could only find boys here. On second floor you could watch Japanese dramas and movies on the big screen. On third floor were a shopping space from Manga, Figure, Dvd, Music. People seemed to be eager to buy a lot of things. A japanese woman, who are selling Gandam figure, said to me that it was very busy this year.

　さらに、今年はスペシャルゲストとして「YMCK」という日本のバンドが招待されている。YMCKは、ザ・元祖ファミコンの、「ピコピコ」というシンプルで単純な音をベースにして音楽を作り上げ、日本だけでなく世界で注目を集めている（僕は知らなかったけど）。

　　Beside, UppCon invited Japanese Band, YMCK, as a special guest. They are said to be popular not only in japan but also in the world, composing music based on the simple sound which was used in classical old “Famicon”(I haven’t known about them until I came to Sweden).

　日本に関するコーナーも用意されている。簡単な日本語入門講座から、折り紙テーブル、ジャニーズ写真（表紙はKATTUN）を見ながらお茶するテーブル。その奥の部屋には「カラオケルーム」。そこからはものすごい下手くそな歌声と、「ニホンバンザイ」という叫びが聞こえた（うそではない）。

　　You could also find some rooms which were filled with Japanese stuff. Japanese language introduction, Origami, the photograph for Janny’s group. From the behind the room, there was a Karaoke room. I heard someone sing a song in a mess way and shout “Nippon Banzai”（No joke!)

　彼らの日本に対する羨望の眼差しには、本当に凄まじいものがあった。僕が日本人だと分かると、「わぁすごい」とまるで天皇陛下を前にしたかのような応対。「ぼくは日本に生まれたかった」という言葉を、一切の葛藤なしに言ってきた男の子。「わたしはアニメ・漫画よりも、日本の伝統文化に興味があるの」と日本への愛の深さをアピールしてきた、デンマークの女の子。

　　Their affection toward Japan was almost astounding me. When they recognized me as Japnese, they reacted like “whao, amazing” as if I were the Majesty of Emperor. One boy went so far as to say ” I wanted to be born in Japan” without hesitation. One Danish girl told me she was more interested in Japanese traditional culture than just animation and Manga, appealing her strong affection to Japan.
